Glimpses of the Past through Picture
Postcards
The Sippican Historical and Preservation Society will use a portion of
this year's Marion Antiques Show proceeds to chronicle Marion's rich and
interesting past by publishing a book entitled A Marion Postcard
History.
Marion was incorporated in 1852 and soon became one of the loveliest
seaside towns on Buzzards Bay. As people flocked to her shores, she
quickly became a destination of the "rich and famous". By 1893 the
tourist trade was in full swing. Over 150 years later, Marion has a rich
legacy of charming cottages, beautiful estates and interesting people.
This informative book on Marion's impressive
history by Sippican Historical and Preservation Society curator, Pete
Smith and local postcard collectors Ann Washburn and Daniel MacKinnon.
The 160 page soft cover book will span the years 1900 through 1950. Some
highlights of the thirteen chapter book will be Hotel Sippican, Tabor
Academy, Hurricanes and much more.
This is the 15th anniversary for the much celebrated Marion Antiques
Show. It has become one of the most important summer events on the South
Coast, especially the gala preview party on Friday evening. There are
usually over 500 people who attend this opening party with great hors d'
oeuvres and raw bar. It also provides an opportunity to purchase the
fine
antiques offered by the sixty plus antique dealers who come from all
over the US and Great Britain.
The Sippican Historical and Preservation Society has used the funds
raised in previous years to complete numerous preservation and
beautification projects in the town of Marion. Some of these include
purchasing and renovating the US post Office building, restoring the Dr.
Ellis House which is the headquarters for the Sippican Historical and
Preservation Society, constructing a lovely Memorial Garden, managing
the Island Wharf project,
including paving the parking lot donating trees to the Marion Tree
Committee to beautify the Route 6 area of town, implementing an
extensive archival data base and connecting with the Elizabeth Tabor
Library and lastly purchasing and renovating the Brown Pharmacy
building.
These are just a few of the numerous projects the Sippican Historical
and Preservation Society has completed with its efforts to preserve
Marion's historic character. Please try to attend this year's Marion
Antiques Show which opens August 14th, 5:30pm to 8:30pm at Tabor Academy
with the gala preview party. Tickets are $55 in advance or $60 at the
door and can be purchased at the Sippican Historical and Preservation
Society, the
Bookstall, Marion Antique Shop and China Trader Antiques or by calling
508-748-1116. The show will run Saturday from 10am to 5pm and Sunday

The Sippican Historical and Preservation Society’s primary fundraising benefit is the
Marion Antiques Show held each August at Tabor Academy in Marion. Now in
its 15th year, the Show has widespread reputation as an outstanding
showcase of fine antiques.
The 2006 14th annual Marion Antiques Show held at Tabor
Academy was once again a true success. Our thanks go to the patrons,
corporate sponsors, committee members, valued dealers and attendees. The
event was kicked off with our Preview Party featuring a raw bar and a
sumptuous array of appetizers as well as the opportunity to preview the
dealers' wares. The show wrapped up on Sunday with expert appraisers on
hand to appraise patron's "treasures" at Heirloom Discovery Day.
Tickets are available.

Heirloom Discovery Day
Heirloom Discovery Day
is one of the most popular events during the Marion Antiques Show
weekend. A panel of experts chosen from among the Show’s 70+ exhibitors
are on-hand to evaluate your favorite treasures.
In past
years, some great treasures have surfaced here, including:
-
An early
19th century whaling log detailing a whaling voyage to the South Pacific by
a New Bedford vessel with beautiful drawings drawn on the borders. Valued
at $20,000.
-
An
important miniature portrait on ivory by American folk art painter, Mrs.
Moses Russell, which later sold for $24,000. The owner of this miniature
piece had it hanging in her kitchen!
Stay tuned for the
time and location of this year’s Heirloom Discovery Day!
