Every town as a Warren Washburn: a man whose long list of accomplishments will benefit others for years to come. A guy behind the scenes who doesn’t take much credit. Mr. Washburn’s start in community service began in 1952, the year Marion celebrated its 100th anniversary. Since the 1960s, he served on the Memorial Day Committee and the Fourth of July Committee. He also loaned out and operated his public address system for any town party or function, church fair, tree lighting, or beach concert. He was a former member of the town’s Finance Committee and Upper Cape Cod Regional Technical High School Committee, and often welcomed apprentice electrical students at his business, Washburn Electric. He organized horse shows throughout the 1960s, orchestrated the memorial for Korean and Vietnam War veterans and worked alongside others to help build elderly housing. He studied the best way to restore the Music Hall and the Elizabeth Taber Library and raised money to donate to the town its very first ambulance. A former World War II U.S. Army Military Police corporal, Mr. Washburn was a stronghold in the local VFW Benjamin D. Cushing Post 2425 and a former deputy chief of staff and aide-de-camp for the national organization.
